Residents of Dolton, Illinois gathered at a heated board meeting on Monday, demanding accountability from Mayor Tiffany Henyard amidst a wave of controversies surrounding her administration. The meeting was characterized by a tumultuous atmosphere, filled with interruptions, disorganization, and emotional outbursts.
Attendees were required to pass through metal detectors, with Dolton police officers and Cook County Sheriff's deputies present to ensure security. However, the tension reached a tipping point as at least three women were escorted out by police after Mayor Henyard accused them of disrupting the proceedings, FOX 32 Chicago reported.
Amidst the chaos, one resident took the opportunity during the public comment section to voice their frustration, stating, "This village deserves so much more than it's getting. From an outsider looking in, you're being hoodwinked, bamboozled, and led astray." Such sentiments echoed among the concerned citizens, reflecting their disappointment with the village's current state of affairs.
Mayor Henyard has faced immense criticism from her detractors, earning her the infamous title of "worst mayor in America." Allegations of financial misconduct, including questionable government spending and controversial police raids, have fueled the residents' ire. Additionally, an alleged sexual assault by one of Henyard's allies during a trip to Las Vegas, followed by the subsequent termination of the victim after speaking out, has added to her growing list of controversies. Furthermore, Henyard's cancer charity has come under scrutiny.
In an attempt to shed light on the allegations and address the mounting concerns, the Village of Dolton hired former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot as a "special investigator" in April. The eagerly awaited results of her investigation are expected to be released on Thursday, with insiders revealing that the findings may reveal a dire financial situation in which the village might struggle to meet payroll in a matter of weeks.
The meeting turned even more contentious as residents criticized Mayor Henyard's confrontational demeanor towards those she represents. In response to accusations, she defiantly proclaimed, "People who say things about me, I want you to prove it because like I said, fact versus fiction." However, her words did little to assuage the growing discontent among the public.
Amidst the turmoil, trustees approved a village-wide "credit card spending freeze," restricting the use of the village's credit card to only the director of administrative services. The freeze includes a cap of $5,000 on a single transaction and aims to curtail excessive spending practices within Dolton. Reports have surfaced of thousands of dollars being spent on various platforms such as Amazon, PayPal, Target, Walgreens, and Jewel-Osco.
As a means of budget-cutting, trustees had also agreed to terminate the acting police chief and several other village employees during the meeting. However, FOX 32 reported that these employees showed up for work on Tuesday, raising questions about the implementation of the decisions made at the meeting.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that two Chicago federal criminal defense attorneys were seated next to Mayor Henyard during the meeting. Although they were not paid for by the village, they were allowed access to the board's closed executive session, adding another layer of intrigue to the unfolding drama.
The residents of Dolton continue to demand transparency and accountability from their embattled mayor. As the investigation by Lori Lightfoot reaches its conclusive phase, the community eagerly awaits the unveiling of the findings, hoping for a clearer path forward. The future of Dolton hangs in the balance as residents and officials grapple with the challenges ahead.
