The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has made a bold move ahead of former President Trump's rally in Pennsylvania, unveiling billboards that allege his threat to access in vitro fertilization (IVF). Located in Johnstown, where Trump is set to campaign, the billboards highlight the DNC's concerns about Trump's stance on IVF and his potential to ban the procedure.
In an exclusive statement sent to The Hill, the DNC argued that Trump has been deceptive about his position on IVF and expressed worries about his intentions to restrict it. The billboards prominently display the message, "Donald Trump's Project 2025 undermines reproductive care and threatens IVF."
Another billboard draws attention to Trump's overturning of Roe v. Wade, which the DNC asserts poses a direct threat to the future of IVF. DNC spokesperson Addy Toevs stated, "Trump can lie about his position on IVF all he wants, but his own 2024 platform threatens to effectively ban IVF and abortion nationwide. Trump overturned Roe v. Wade and opened the door to the flood of threats we are now witnessing to IVF, with fetal personhood bills prevalent in 19 states and counting."
Trump, on the other hand, made assurances on Thursday that his administration, if reelected, would protect access to IVF and support covering treatment costs through either the government or insurance companies. Despite IVF becoming a significant concern for voters following the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling that frozen embryos should be considered individuals, Trump has continually expressed his backing for the procedure and the need for its protection.
Democrats have attempted to link Trump to Project 2025, a plan developed by the Heritage Foundation for a future GOP administration. Trump, however, has distanced himself from this initiative. He publicly criticized the plan in July for going "way too far" on abortion, as it includes proposals to revoke FDA approval of the abortion pill mifepristone and suggests using the Comstock Act, a 19th-century law, to prosecute individuals who send abortion pills or tools through the mail.
As Trump's rally in Pennsylvania approaches, the billboards erected by the DNC serve as a reminder of the ongoing debate surrounding access to IVF and the potential ramifications of Trump's policies in this area. With reproductive rights continuing to be a crucial issue for many voters, the spotlight remains on Trump's stance and the impact it could have on reproductive care.
