Renowned Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, currently serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault, has been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19 and contracting double pneumonia, according to his representative.
Weinstein, who has been incarcerated since his 2020 conviction in New York, was taken back to the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward to receive treatment for his ongoing health conditions, which include diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid on his heart and lungs, and other ailments. His representative, Craig Rothfeld, noted that these conditions continue to affect Weinstein on a daily basis.
Emphasizing their gratitude towards the prison staff and medical personnel at DOCS, CHS, and NYC H+H, Weinstein's representative expressed their commitment to working closely with them to ensure proper medical treatment for the disgraced mogul.
Weinstein's prison stint took a turn earlier this year when his conviction was overturned, leading to the scheduling of a new trial. The estimated date for jury selection has been set for November 12.
In the original New York case, Weinstein had been found guilty on two charges. The first charge, criminal sexual assault in the first degree, was based on the testimony of Miriam Haley, a former Project Runway production assistant. The second charge, rape in the third degree, stemmed from the testimony of Jessica Mann, a onetime aspiring actress.
Furthermore, Weinstein faced convictions by a Los Angeles jury in 2022 on three counts of sexual assault against Jane Doe No. 1, later identified as former Russian model Evgeniya Chernyshova. Weinstein has filed an appeal against the resulting 16-year prison sentence.
As Weinstein battles COVID-19 and double pneumonia in his lungs, his medical treatment remains a priority for prison authorities, while legal proceedings surrounding his case continue to unfold.
