In a strategic move to solidify Joe Biden as the party's presidential candidate, Democratic bosses are planning to formalize his candidacy before the upcoming convention in Chicago. This decision comes as a rebellion within the party, sparked by last month's debate fiasco, has waned following a failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

According to Axios, the Democratic National Committee is aiming to exploit the current impasse by implementing a plan that would secure Biden's nomination. They propose conducting a week-long electronic roll call starting from late July, in which convention delegates would vote. If a majority of the 4,000 delegates support Biden, his candidacy would become technically unchallengeable when the convention begins on August 19.

The electronic vote is expected to commence on July 29 and conclude on August 5. This timeline allows two more weeks for Biden to navigate the mutiny that has arisen due to concerns over his age and signs of cognitive decline, as some Democrats fear these factors could lead to a catastrophic loss against Trump in the November election.

Initially, an early roll call was planned to comply with Ohio election law, requiring nominees to be confirmed by August 7 to appear on state ballots. However, Ohio recently extended its deadline to September 1, rendering the early poll unnecessary for legal compliance. Jaime Harrison, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, expressed the need for the early vote, claiming they couldn't rely on Ohio Republicans to decide Biden's fate on the general election ballot.

Critics of the proposal argue that it undermines Biden's invitation for dissatisfied Democrats to challenge his nomination at the convention. Some party insiders also reveal concerns about the mayhem caused by an early vote. Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, a delegate, expressed her dissent in an internal email, calling for the DNC to halt its push for an early vote.

To date, 20 Democratic members of Congress and one senator have publically urged Biden to withdraw his candidacy. However, notable voices calling for his replacement have been silent following the recent attack on Trump. Biden himself has adopted a presidential stance, emphasizing national unity and denouncing political violence.

After temporarily suspending his campaign in the wake of the assassination attempt, Biden plans to resume his activities by focusing on engaging Black voters. He will address the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Las Vegas and give an interview to the BET TV channel. As he confronts the challenge of targeting Trump while maintaining a calm political rhetoric, Biden aims to strike a balance in his messaging.

As Biden gears up for his campaign restart, concerns arise among his congressional supporters and strategists. The Washington Post reports that there are rumblings among them, as Biden claimed without evidence in a weekend Zoom call that he was leading within the margin of error even after the debate. However, several polls since the debate showed a decline in his support and an increase in favor of him stepping aside, even among Democratic voters.

Biden's assessment of the polling data differs from the numbers published by the 538 website, as no polls since June show him leading by four points. A recent New York Times/Siena poll highlights Biden trailing Trump by three points in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, while leading by the same margin in Virginia, a state he won by 10 points in 2020.

The race to secure Biden's candidacy for the Democratic Party continues as the party leaders plan to move ahead with the electronic vote to ensure his nomination.
