In a devastating series of tornadoes, at least 8 people have tragically lost their lives and many more have been injured as multiple twisters swept through parts of Arkansas. This event marks the deadliest tornado occurrence in the state since April 27, 2014.
Governor Sarah Sanders swiftly responded to the catastrophe by signing a state of emergency order and authorizing funds for recovery efforts. Governor Sanders expressed her heartfelt condolences, stating, "Bryan and I are praying for the communities impacted by last night's storm and the families of the Arkansans we lost."
Boone County suffered significant damage, with a 26-year-old woman found dead outside a destroyed home in Olvey. Daniel Bolen of the county's emergency management office confirmed that an EF3 tornado ravaged the area. In Benton County, at least 3 people lost their lives, including one individual with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who tragically succumbed due to a lack of oxygen after losing power. A tree falling on a trailer claimed another victim's life, as reported by Benton County Judge Barry Moehring.
Marion County also experienced the devastating impact of the severe weather, with at least 3 weather-related deaths reported. Emergency shelters have been set up to provide aid and support to those displaced by storm damage. Thousands of residents remain without power, prompting ongoing efforts by emergency crews to conduct search and rescue operations.
Emergency officials strongly urge individuals to avoid unnecessary travel in the affected areas to allow law enforcement, fire departments, and EMS crews to prioritize search and rescue missions.
Governor Sarah Sanders plans to tour the impacted areas on Monday to assess the damage firsthand and offer support to the affected communities. The road to recovery may be long, but the resilient spirit of Arkansas is sure to prevail, as the state comes together to rebuild in the aftermath of this tragic natural disaster.
