Country music singer John Rich has extended a generous offer to fraternity members at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) who were captured on video protecting an American flag during a recent campus protest. The incident occurred on Tuesday in UNC Chapel Hill's main quad, where pro-Palestinian demonstrators replaced the U.S. flag with a Palestinian flag, leading to clashes between protesters and counterprotesters.
In the footage that became viral on social media, members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity bravely stepped in to ensure that the American flag did not touch the ground, even in the face of verbal insults and objects being hurled at them by the protesters. Impressed by their efforts, John Rich took to social media to publicly offer a free concert as a celebration of their patriotism and love for the flag.
"I'd like to offer a free concert for their celebration of freedom party," Rich wrote on social media on Wednesday, while also asking for help in locating the fraternity members involved in the incident. He even suggested that conservative radio host Dan Bongino could do a live broadcast from their frat house. The offer gained widespread support, with conservative activist Scott Presler expressing interest in setting up a voter registration table during the event.
Hours later, John Rich announced that he had successfully made contact with the fraternity brothers and was working on finalizing a date for a massive event to celebrate the flag and those who value it. He dubbed the event "#Flagstock" and urged his followers to help make it trend on social media.
UNC Interim Chancellor Lee Roberts personally intervened in the protest and helped raise the U.S. flag back to its rightful position when it was initially removed from the flagpole. However, the pro-Palestinian protesters attempted to remove it again after the Chancellor left. The fraternity brothers of Pi Kappa Phi rushed to defend the flag, enduring the onslaught of water bottles, rocks, and profanity, standing tall in their commitment to protecting the symbol that represents the sacrifice of many.
This incident at UNC Chapel Hill comes amidst a series of nationwide protests that began at Columbia University in New York City two weeks ago. The students at Columbia established an encampment demanding their university to divest from companies with connections to Israel due to its war in Gaza. The conflict in Gaza started after a deadly attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7 of last year, resulting in the loss of many lives.
John Rich's offer of a free concert is a testament to the appreciation for the bravery and loyalty displayed by the fraternity members at UNC Chapel Hill, garnering support from public figures like Rep. Dan Bishop, who eagerly declared his attendance at the event. The proposed celebration of patriotism and love for the American flag promises to bring people together in a unified display of respect and admiration for the symbol that represents the spirit of the United States.
