Despite facing objections and a legal battle, the controversial biopic, "The Apprentice," based on the life of former US President Donald Trump, is still on track for a pre-election release in the United States. The film, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, depicts Trump's early career in New York's real estate industry and delves into his personal life, including a graphic spousal rape scene involving his then-wife, Ivana.
Deadline reports that the film, featuring actors Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as his mentor Roy Cohn, is scheduled for release on October 11. However, the distribution process faced a setback when a company owned by former Washington football team owner, Dan Snyder, expressed displeasure with the film's portrayal of Trump. In an effort to move forward with the release, plans are underway to buy out Snyder's group from the film at a 40% markup.
Briarcliff Entertainment, known for distributing films from acclaimed filmmaker Michael Moore and others, is set to distribute "The Apprentice" in both the US and international markets. However, the film's journey to the screens is expected to be challenging, with potential hurdles in securing widespread distribution. Despite this, the production team is determined, with plans to showcase the film at select film festivals following its astonishing reception at Cannes.
In response to the film's portrayal of the spousal rape scene, Trump's campaign denied the depiction, labeling it as "pure malicious defamation." Back in May, Trump issued a cease and desist letter to stop the film's release. However, he has not pursued any legal action beyond this letter, suggesting that he may face difficulties in preventing the film's distribution.
The controversy surrounding "The Apprentice" comes at a time when Trump continues to face scrutiny over allegations of sexual abuse. A New York court recently found him civilly liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll, further adding to the controversial nature of the film.
As the release date looms closer, the fate of "The Apprentice" remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the film's persistence despite objections and legal challenges underscores the enduring interest in exploring the life and legacy of the 45th President of the United States.
