A group of contestants who participated in the popular reality competition show, "Beast Games," hosted by internet sensation Jimmy Donaldson, also known as MrBeast, have filed a lawsuit against Mr. Donaldson and the production companies behind the show. The contestants accuse them of subjecting participants to "dangerous circumstances and conditions."
The lawsuit, filed by five anonymous contestants in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, details various allegations regarding the filming of "Beast Games" in July. The production team, along with Amazon MGM Studios, invited approximately 2,000 contestants to a football stadium in Las Vegas for the show.
Among the allegations made in the heavily redacted lawsuit are claims of inadequate food and medical care, as initially reported by The New York Times. The suit also asserts that false information was provided to Nevada state officials to obtain "unearned tax credits." Furthermore, the contestants argue that they have not been adequately compensated for their participation in the show.
One of the plaintiffs, identified in the lawsuit as Contestant 4, expressed their initial excitement to be part of a significant production but ultimately felt mistreated, traumatized, and insignificant. Contestant 4 highlighted the delay in receiving payment and subsequently sought mental health treatment for anxiety.
Another contestant, identified as Contestant 5, shared feeling embarrassed and degraded by their experience on the show. The contestants participating in the lawsuit hope to prevent others from enduring similar mistreatment.
Despite the lawsuit, a representative for MrBeast declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings. Similarly, a representative for Amazon MGM Studios did not provide a response to the request for comment.
Jimmy Donaldson, the 26-year-old YouTube sensation who achieved fame through his philanthropic videos, announced "Beast Games" in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios earlier this year. The show was designed to mirror the format of his popular YouTube content, promising a prize of $5 million and a competitor pool of 1,000 people.
However, a Times investigation conducted earlier this summer revealed unpleasant and potentially dangerous conditions on the set of "Beast Games." Contestants faced challenges such as a lack of sufficient food and medical care, which resulted in multiple injuries and hospitalizations. They also expressed concerns about inadequate crowd control and logistical issues.
Moreover, upon their arrival in Las Vegas, contestants discovered that the number of participants was twice what they had been told, leading to a feeling of being misled about their odds of winning the grand prize.
The lawsuit alleges that the filming of "Beast Games" was marred by various complications, including the "CrowdStrike incident," extreme weather, and unexpected logistical and communication issues. Contestant 4, reflecting on their experiences, emphasized how appearances can be deceiving and advised others not to assume that everything portrayed in MrBeast's videos is as grand and exciting in reality.
As the lawsuit unfolds, it remains to be seen how MrBeast's production company and Amazon MGM Studios will respond to the allegations put forth by the contestants.
