Connecticut residents are facing another wave of rate increases for both Eversource and United Illuminating, as approved by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA). The latest hikes aim to support the improvement of the state's electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Eversource customers will experience a rate increase of 0.3845 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), effective from September 1, 2022, through April 30, 2025. According to an Eversource spokesperson, a typical residential customer using 700kWh a month can expect an additional $3 per month during this period.
Similarly, United Illuminating customers will see a rate hike of 0.4592 cents per kWh. These adjustments come as PURA aims to enhance the state's electric vehicle charging grid.
In a statement on Facebook, Rep. Vincent Candelora and Sen. Stephen Harding expressed concerns about the impact of these rate increases on consumers. They believe that these additional costs will further burden customers who are already grappling with high monthly electric bills. They called on Governor Ned Lamont (D-Conn.) to address the issue by holding a special session on climbing electric rates, advocating for consumer choice instead of mandates related to electric vehicles.
Eversource customers have recently expressed shock over unusually high July electric bills. Eversource attributed the increased charges partly to "public benefit charges," which cover costs associated with state-required and approved programs and policies.
Despite the rate increases, Eversource expressed appreciation for PURA's decision, emphasizing the importance of the state's electric vehicle rebate program. They acknowledged the positive impact of more electric vehicles on air quality and the fight against climate change. Eversource pledged to continue advocating for regulatory policies that provide stable and predictable rates while supporting Connecticut's public policy goals.
As Connecticut residents face the challenges of rising energy costs, it remains crucial for government entities and energy providers to collaborate in finding solutions that balance affordability with the pursuit of sustainable energy initiatives.
