Several Democratic members of the U.S. House and Senate from Connecticut revealed Thursday they were the recipients of bomb threats. This alarming development comes on the heels of similar threats earlier in the week aimed at nominees of President-elect Trump, none of which were deemed credible.
Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, disclosed that he received a bomb threat directed at his home where he was celebrating Thanksgiving with his family. Himes provided a statement expressing his concern over the threat.
Similar threats plagued other Connecticut representatives. Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) reported receiving an email Thursday morning, relayed by her local police chief, which indicated a pipe bomb had been placed in her mailbox. Meanwhile, Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.) also faced a bomb threat while he and his family were at home celebrating Thanksgiving, as confirmed by his spokesperson.
Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) also dealt with a bomb threat. He stated that local police arrived at his residence Thursday morning and determined that no explosive device was present on the property.
The issue of bomb threats has not been confined to Connecticut. In metro Atlanta and across other states, several voting precincts were targeted by non-credible bomb threats on Tuesday, which officials believe originated from Russia. This caused brief interruptions in voting at twelve polling places situated in predominantly Democratic areas. The Department of Justice announced that a Georgia poll worker was arrested and charged with mailing a bomb threat to election workers.
In response to these heightened threats, security measures around the White House and Vice President Harris' residence in Washington, D.C. have been intensified. Additionally, National Guard units and local law enforcement agencies in various states are ramping up preparations to handle potential Election Day violence.
