Late-night hosts have been discussing the ongoing criminal hush-money trial of former President Donald Trump, as congressional Republicans continue to show their support for him in court. On Thursday, Trump appeared for his trial accompanied by several Republican members of Congress, including JD Vance, Lauren Boebert, Tim Scott, and Matt Gaetz. The presence of these lawmakers prompted humorous comments from hosts such as Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert.
Seth Meyers, on Late Night, jokingly remarked, "Man, Beavis and Butthead are everywhere," noting the numerous Republican representatives at Trump's trial. He quipped that there were possibly more Republican members of Congress at the trial than at the Capitol, suggesting it might be a good day to storm the Capitol. Meyers highlighted the irony of Trump not being able to directly attack individuals involved in the case due to a gag order, but utilizing his supporters as his "army of puppets."
Meyers also criticized the character witnesses chosen by Trump, specifically mentioning Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, stating, "That's like if OJ's buddies at his trial were Charles Manson and Hannibal Lecter." Despite this critique, Gaetz and Boebert were reportedly seated in the front row of the courtroom. Meyers humorously compared sitting in the front row of the Trump trial to a Maga version of sitting courtside at a Knicks game.
Stephen Colbert, on The Late Show, also discussed Trump's day in court, highlighting Trump's lawyers grilling his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. Colbert jokingly mentioned Cohen's testimony about having a hard time securing tickets to Trump's inauguration, sarcastically noting that there were "plenty of seats available." Colbert also commented on Trump's upcoming debates with Joe Biden, mentioning that Republicans are already working to undermine the terms of those debates.
Outside the courthouse, Trump spoke to reporters, condemning the trial as a "scam and a sham." Colbert humorously suggested that Trump needed to get the trial over with quickly because he has a busy summer ahead, including the scheduled debates with Biden.
The star witness in the trial, Michael Cohen, Trump's former fixer, has been a pivotal figure in the government's case. Cohen's testimony directly links Trump to the falsification of business records, which is the central crime being discussed in the trial. Late-night host Desi Lydic, guest hosting on The Daily Show, humorously referred to Cohen as "all of Long Island distilled into one man."
Lydic highlighted the defense's efforts to undermine Cohen's credibility by playing a clip from his podcast where he expresses anger towards Trump. She jokingly remarked on the difficulty of maintaining that level of anger when also reading podcast ads. Lydic concluded her segment by joking about the jurors having to listen to Cohen's podcast and questioning who the podcast is intended for.
The late-night hosts provided comedic commentary on the ongoing hush-money trial, highlighting the presence of Republican lawmakers, mocking the choice of character witnesses, and discussing the defense's attempts to discredit Michael Cohen. As the trial progresses, it remains to be seen how the proceedings will impact Trump and his legal troubles moving forward.
