In a heartfelt effort to bring closure to a tragic case, volunteers searched several communities on the North Shore of Massachusetts on Saturday for the remains of Harmony Montgomery, a little girl who was brutally beaten to death by her father in 2019. Despite the killer dad refusing to reveal the location of Harmony's body, determined search crews scoured the 600-acre Rumney Marsh Reservation.
Harmony's mother, Crystal Sorey, expressed her acceptance of the fact that her ex-partner, 34-year-old Adam Montgomery, would never do the right thing for their daughter. Montgomery was sentenced in May to 45 years to life in prison for murdering the 5-year-old girl and hiding her body. He stored her remains in a tote bag, cooler, and freezer at the restaurant where he worked before eventually disposing of them. Even when prosecutors offered him a lighter sentence in exchange for disclosing the location, Montgomery remained silent.
While combing the designated area, Sorey mentioned how the search had become a recurring theme in her dreams. The task at hand seemed like finding a needle in a haystack, with volunteers like Thomas Seretta emphasizing the difficulty of the search.
Susan Vandecasteele, another volunteer, expressed her frustration at Montgomery's lack of decency in helping to put Harmony to rest. Despite the efforts, Montgomery's silence raises more questions about his lack of repentance.
Authorities narrowed their search to a 106-mile route that Montgomery drove in a rented U-Haul between Manchester and the Tobin Bridge in Boston back in March 2020. Senior Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati stated that Harmony's remains were likely somewhere along this route.
Sorey plans to organize monthly searches to continue her quest for answers regarding her vanished daughter. She encourages anyone with information to contact the case tip line at 603-932-8997.
During Montgomery's trial, prosecutors revealed that he beat Harmony to death in a fit of rage due to her bathroom accidents in the car. He then proceeded to indulge in fast food and drugs, ignoring the child's final cries as she succumbed to her injuries in the backseat. Montgomery callously kept Harmony's decomposing body in the restaurant's freezer, alongside food, before ultimately discarding her like "yesterday's trash."
Prosecutor Ben Agati argued that revealing the location of Harmony's body would provide much-needed closure for her grieving family. Yet, Montgomery's refusal to cooperate further solidified his lack of remorse. Citing his violent criminal history, Judge Amy Messer sentenced him to 45 years to life, to be served consecutively with his prior decades-long term for weapons charges.
The disappearance of Harmony Montgomery in 2019 went unnoticed by law enforcement until two years later, adding another layer of tragedy to the case. As the search for Harmony's remains persists, the community rallies behind Sorey, demonstrating their unwavering support in her effort to find answers and bring her daughter home one day.
