In the aftermath of a devastating mass shooting at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, the community of 3,200 people has come together to support one another in the face of grief and the closure of their only grocery store. Volunteers braved inclement weather to distribute essential supplies to those in need.

Despite the rain pouring outside Fordyce High School, dedicated volunteers hurriedly handed out jugs of milk and bags of groceries to a long line of cars snaking around the parking lot. The closure of Mad Butcher, while workers clean up from the aftermath of the violence, has left residents with limited alternatives. Although nearby options such as Walmart and discount retailers offer some food items, the closest grocery stores or supermarkets are located in neighboring cities, at least half an hour away.

Recognizing the difficulties this situation poses, Darrin Brazil, the school's basketball coach, alongside two former classmates, organized the food pickup to assist those who are unable to travel to distant locations for groceries. Many community members, especially the elderly, lack the means and ability to make the extended journey.

In response to the closure of Mad Butcher, the school, city facilities, and churches have opened their doors to provide residents with the opportunity to collect groceries during this challenging period. This initiative sheds light on the issue of "food deserts," where access to affordable and nutritious food is limited or non-existent. Notably, similar community-driven efforts emerged in Buffalo in 2022 after a white supremacist killed 10 people at a supermarket.

Roderick Rogers, a city council member and pastor, emphasized the importance of addressing this fundamental need and the unity it has fostered in Fordyce. He stated, "It's a basic need that people have. It's kind of bringing us together, to be honest. We're trying to respond with love to overcome this tragedy."

Amidst the shock and grief gripping Fordyce, the community's resolve has been unwavering. The outpouring of support and the determination to come together in the face of adversity is a testament to the strength and resilience of its residents.
