In a decision that has sparked controversy, Columbia University has announced the cancellation of its main commencement ceremony, citing security concerns stemming from the recent wave of anti-Israel protests. The move has drawn criticism from President Trump, who believes such cancellations "shouldn't happen."

The decision comes in the wake of more than 2,400 arrests made at anti-Israel demonstrations on college campuses across the nation. On Monday alone, over 50 individuals were taken into custody at the campus of UC San Diego.

One incident captured on video at Hunter College in New York City showcased a man waving an Israeli flag amid a large anti-Israel crowd. He was quickly shouted down by the demonstrators, with a woman even thrusting a large Palestinian flag in his face. The event underscores the escalating tensions on college campuses as protests continue nationwide.

Among those calling out the anti-Israel activists is Melinda Roth, a professor at George Washington University Law School. In a public Facebook post, she condemned their actions as spreading "hate" and urged them to redirect their efforts towards assisting those affected in Gaza. Roth also questioned their dependency on their parents for financial support, suggesting that they utilize their resources to aid those genuinely in need.

George Washington University is just one of many universities across the country that has seen spaces overtaken by anti-Israel protests, often in the form of tent encampments. At GWU's University Yard, a green space on its urban campus, students have set up camp in solidarity with the cause.

This cancellation of the main graduation event at Columbia University highlights the growing impact of these protests on campus activities. The concern for security has overshadowed the celebration for graduating students, raising questions about the balance between free expression and the need for a safe and inclusive environment.

As the protests persist, universities are grappling with how to address the concerns of students participating in the demonstrations while ensuring the safety and well-being of the entire campus community. The cancellation of the graduation event serves as a stark example of the challenges faced by academic institutions in an increasingly polarized society.

It remains to be seen how universities nationwide will navigate these complex situations, as they strive to uphold the principles of free speech while maintaining a secure and inclusive environment for all students.
