In the past few days, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has been inundated with calls regarding illegal fireworks. According to a spokesperson for the CSPD, they have received a total of 251 calls since June 30, reporting instances of people violating the fireworks ordinance.
Despite the high number of reports, the CSPD has only issued a single citation. The spokesperson explains that the ordinance requires officers to physically witness someone igniting a firework in order to write a citation. Unfortunately, by the time officers arrive at the scene, the lawbreakers have often stopped setting off the fireworks, making it difficult for citations to be issued. However, the CSPD does seize the illegal fireworks and takes the opportunity to educate the individuals involved.
All fireworks in Colorado Springs that require a flame for ignition, including those with a fuse, are considered unlawful. The only exceptions are novelty items like snappers and poppers. Professional fireworks shows are permitted but must be obtained with a permit.
The CSPD emphasizes that starting a fire with a firework that endangers or damages property is considered a crime of arson. The possession, use, and sale of illegal fireworks can result in fines up to $2,500 and/or a maximum of 189 days in jail.
Officials are urging residents to celebrate responsibly and respect the laws in place to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. The CSPD will continue to respond to reports of illegal fireworks and take appropriate action when possible.
As the holiday season continues, it is essential for individuals to prioritize the safety of themselves and their community by adhering to the guidelines and regulations put forth by local authorities.
