Colorado election officials have successfully disrupted a scheme to cast votes using stolen mail ballots in Mesa County, thanks to the state's rigorous voter signature verification process. This system compares the signatures on returned ballots against the ones on file for each voter, ensuring the authenticity of each vote.

Concerns were raised when election workers reached out to voters to cure discrepancies related to their ballot signatures. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the targeted voters had not voted, which unveiled an attempt to fraudulently use a dozen stolen ballots. Most of the fraudulent votes were intercepted before being counted, though three ballots did slip through initial verification and were counted.

Secretary of State Jena Griswold confirmed that the stolen ballots never reached the intended recipients, who lived close to one another in Mesa County. Griswold, citing the ongoing criminal investigation, refrained from discussing potential suspects, motives, or the political implications of the scheme.

Matt Crane, head of the Colorado County Clerks Association, praised the robustness of Colorado’s electoral process at a news conference. He highlighted that such fraud attempts, although rare, can be detected and addressed effectively. Crane urged voters to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities, adding that this was the first case of its kind in his 25 years of election administration.

In response to the situation, Mesa County Clerk Bobbie Gross emphasized the commitment to maintaining election integrity. Gross urged for public patience, stressing the importance of a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable without compromising the integrity of the inquiry.

The three fraudulent ballots that were counted could not be removed from the system due to Colorado’s confidential ballot-casting process. Once ballots are verified and separated from their envelopes, they become anonymous and irrevocable.

To bolster election security, Mesa County has intensified scrutiny of all received ballots, and election officials across Colorado have been alerted to enhance their vigilance. While another potential case of voter fraud is under investigation elsewhere in the state, further details remain scarce.

Election officials encourage voters to track their ballot status via govotecolorado.gov and remain observant of any irregularities. All Mesa County voters impacted by the fraud will receive new ballots to ensure their votes are accurately counted.

Mesa County, largely Republican, has been a focal point for election-related controversies in recent years, including a notable security breach in 2021 by former county clerk Tina Peters. This incident underscores the ongoing necessity for stringent election security measures.

This developing story highlights the lengths to which Colorado election officials are willing to go to safeguard the democratic process, with full cooperation from local authorities and community involvement.
