Dozens of Israeli protesters, including far-right members of the Knesset, clashed with military police on Monday after at least nine soldiers suspected of abusing a Palestinian prisoner were detained for questioning from the Sde Teiman detention facility in southern Israel. The incident unfolded as the soldiers, who are part of a unit known as Force 100, were taken into custody following allegations of "substantial abuse" of a detainee at the facility.

The protesters, waving Israeli flags, stormed through the facility's gate in an attempt to prevent the soldiers' arrests while chanting "shame". Some even tried to break into the facility, with reports indicating that pepper spray was directed at the military police conducting the detainment.

Israeli media reported that a Palestinian prisoner had to be hospitalized with severe injuries, which left him unable to walk. This prompted Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, Israel's military advocate general, to order a military police investigation into the matter. The detained soldiers were subsequently transferred to the Beit Lid military base for further questioning.

The clashes and subsequent detention led to a sharp divide in public opinion, with far-right politicians, including ministers, rushing to defend the soldiers and demanding the halt of investigations against them. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and others from the Otzma Yehudit party voiced their support for the soldiers and criticized the military for their actions.

In response to the protests and disruptions, Israeli Army Chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi condemned the behavior, stating that breaking into a military base and disturbing order was unacceptable. Both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called for calm and urged that authorized parties be allowed to conduct necessary investigations.

On the international front, reports of the mistreatment of detainees in Israeli prisons have raised concerns and garnered attention. The Washington Post highlighted the death of at least 12 Palestinians in Israeli jails since the country launched its war on Gaza, citing instances of abuse and neglect leading to tragic outcomes.

With growing scrutiny on Israel's treatment of detainees, rights groups such as Amnesty International have called for an end to indefinite detentions and torture within Israeli prisons. Amnesty documented cases of Palestinians, including women and a 14-year-old boy, being held for months without contact with their families.

The developments surrounding the detention of the soldiers and the broader issue of prisoner abuse in Israeli facilities continue to be points of contention both domestically and internationally. As investigations unfold and calls for accountability persist, the matter remains at the forefront of ongoing discussions on human rights and justice in the region.
