Leading civil rights attorney Ben Crump has joined forces with the family of D'vontaye Mitchell, a Wisconsin man who was killed during a mental health crisis while being restrained by hotel security officers. The incident occurred on June 30 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Milwaukee, which is set to host the Republican national convention from July 15-18.

According to NBC News, Mitchell was held down by four security guards as he grunted and screamed for help. Heartbreaking footage captured one of the guards appearing to kneel on his body. Despite the tragic circumstances, no charges have been filed, and the police have reportedly not initiated a criminal investigation.

The Milwaukee County medical examiner's office has classified Mitchell's preliminary manner of death as a homicide, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. This revelation further intensifies the demand for justice and accountability in this case. Mitchell's death bears striking similarities to the killing of George Floyd, who was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis last year, triggering worldwide protests against racial injustice.

During a press conference held on Monday outside the Hyatt Regency, Crump emphasized the importance of ensuring justice for Mitchell, particularly in light of the upcoming Republican national convention. The attorney demanded that the incident not be trivialized and overshadowed by the convention, calling for a major focus on justice in Milwaukee.

In response to the tragic event, Hyatt issued a statement expressing their condolences to Mitchell's family and the Milwaukee community. The hotel revealed that the employees involved in the incident have been suspended during an internal investigation, ensuring compliance with their safety and security standards.

Mitchell's grieving family, represented by their lawyers, calls for the immediate release of video evidence depicting the events leading to his death. Brenda Giles, Mitchell's mother, pleads for justice for her son and questions the delay in transparency, urging the hotel authorities to "make that make sense."

As the investigation continues, the demand for accountability grows stronger. The tragic killing of D'vontaye Mitchell has not only shaken his family but also raised concerns about the treatment of individuals in mental health crises. The call for justice resonates loudly, with hopes that this case will not be swept under the rug amidst the bustling preparations for the Republican national convention.
