At least one child was killed and several others were injured, including a 1-year-old and an 8-year-old, after a mass shooting unfolded at a family gathering in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood on Saturday night. According to the Chicago Police Department, a black sedan pulled up to the outdoor event and without warning, the occupants opened fire on the crowd. Witnesses reported hearing around 18 gunshots, prompting a ShotSpotter alert. Police arrived at the scene and found multiple victims with gunshot wounds.

Tragically, an 8-year-old girl who was shot in the head succumbed to her injuries at Comer Children's Hospital, where she was taken after the incident. The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. Two other young boys, a 1-year-old and an 8-year-old, were also critically injured, sustaining gunshot wounds to the abdomen. They are currently receiving treatment at Comer Children's Hospital.

In addition to the children, a 36-year-old man suffered two gunshot wounds to the back and is in critical condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center. The remaining victims, aged between 19 and 40, are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Chief Don Jerome addressed the media during a press conference, emphasizing that this was not a random act of violence. He stated that the shooting was likely gang-related, but emphasized the importance of identifying those responsible.
