In a surprising turn of events, the Kansas City Chiefs' 2024 training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph got off to a somewhat rocky start on Sunday morning. Both expected and unexpected injury news dominated the headlines as the team took to the field for their first full practice session.
Safety Justin Reid raised concerns when he appeared at practice without a helmet, indicating a potential injury. It was later revealed that Reid had been listed on the team's Active/NFI (non-football injury) list in Saturday's NFL transactions report. While he remains on the roster, he is unable to participate in practice until he passes a physical examination. More information regarding Reid's situation is expected to be revealed by head coach Andy Reid in his upcoming press conference.
In another setback, tight end Gerrit Prince was notably absent from practice. Prince, who had been on the practice squad, suffered a broken foot late last December and was spotted wearing a walking boot on Friday. It has now been confirmed that Prince will be waived with an injury designation on Monday. Stepping into his place on the roster will be tight end Izaiah Gathings, who was previously signed to the practice squad following Prince's injury last season. Gathings had been waived from the offseason roster on May 4.
On a slightly more positive note, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, although added to the Active/NFI list on Saturday evening due to an illness, was able to participate in practice on Sunday. This suggests that Edwards-Helaire's condition has improved, and he is expected to be activated to the roster in the next official transactions report.
However, there were still a few key players who were unable to join their teammates on the field. Left guard Joe Thuney (pectoral), cornerback Jaylen Watson (labrum), and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (triceps) were observed without their helmets, undergoing training exercises with the team's trainers. These players had been placed on the Active/PUP (physically-unable-to-perform) list last Wednesday. Defensive end Charles Omenihu was noticeably absent, as was defensive end BJ Thompson, who was placed on the Active/NFI list due to an illness on Wednesday.
The Chiefs' training camp has certainly hit a roadblock early on with these unexpected injuries. Fans and experts alike will be eagerly awaiting updates on the status of the injured players and hoping for swift recoveries as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
