Chicago Police Officer Shot and Killed on Southwest Side

In a tragic incident on the Southwest Side of Chicago, an off-duty police officer was shot and killed early Sunday morning, according to the Chicago Police Department (CPD). The incident occurred in the city's Gage Park neighborhood on South Kedzie Avenue at around 3 a.m.

CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling stated that officers responded to a gunshot detection alert in the area before discovering the off-duty officer, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The officer, identified as Luis M. Huesca, a 6-year veteran of the department, was just two days away from celebrating his 31st birthday.

Authorities revealed that the officer's vehicle had been taken from the scene, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation. Huesca was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center but was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his deep condolences and grief over the loss of Officer Huesca, stating that no family or community should ever have to go through such pain. He assured Huesca's mother and uncle, whom he met with personally, that they would have the full support of his administration during this difficult time.

A somber procession took place later in the morning as Huesca's body was transported from the hospital to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. The devastating loss has sent shockwaves throughout the city, with condolences pouring in for Huesca's family, fellow officers, and the community.

CPD continues to search for the suspect(s) involved in the shooting, with investigators actively working to determine a motive. As the investigation progresses, updates will be provided to the public.

Mayor Johnson emphasized his commitment to bringing justice to those responsible for Huesca's untimely death. He announced that his Office of Community Safety, in collaboration with Superintendent Snelling and the CPD, will mobilize all available resources to ensure that those involved in the morning's shooting are apprehended.

The entire city of Chicago mourns the loss of Officer Luis M. Huesca, a dedicated officer who tragically lost his life to senseless gun violence. As the community grieves, support and condolences continue to pour in for his family and loved ones.
