**House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Experiences Airport Detainment Following Ambien and Alcohol Mix**
Earlier this month, Representative Michael McCaul faced an unexpected situation at Dulles International Airport leading to his detention by law enforcement. The incident stemmed from what McCaul described as a regrettable decision to combine the sleep aid Ambien with alcohol, according to a statement made by the congressman.
A spokesperson for McCaul acknowledged the event, revealing that the congressman, described as "a nervous flyer," ingested Ambien and consumed alcohol before boarding a flight to Texas. Consequently, McCaul missed his flight. In his disoriented state, he managed to lock himself out of his cell phone, ultimately drawing the attention of airport police who detained him under the assumption that he was intoxicated.
In a statement to Semafor, McCaul took full responsibility for his actions, explaining, "Two weekends ago, I made a mistake - one for which I take full responsibility. This was the result of a poor decision I made to mix an Ambien - which I took in order to sleep on the upcoming flight - with some alcohol. Law enforcement officers briefly detained me while I waited for a family member to pick me up."
The congressman expressed gratitude towards the police officers involved and emphasized that the incident does not reflect his character. "I have nothing but respect and gratitude for the officers who intercepted me that evening. This incident does not reflect who I am and who I strive to be. As a human, I am not perfect. But I am determined to learn from this mistake and, God-willing, make myself a better person," McCaul stated.
