According to a recent CBS News/YouGov poll published on Sunday, former President Trump and Vice President Harris are in a tightly contested race in key battleground states. Democrats have rallied behind Harris as their newly official nominee, resulting in a notable boost in her support.
The poll reveals that Harris holds a slight 1-point lead over Trump nationally, which puts the Democrats in a more favorable position compared to when President Biden was leading the ticket. In a head-to-head race, both candidates are tied with 50 percent support each in battleground states. However, Harris manages to extend her lead by 1 point when third-party candidates are taken into account.
Since assuming the role as the Democratic nominee, Harris has witnessed a surge of enthusiasm and support from her party. Her campaign has broken fundraising records and attracted large crowds, reflecting the growing optimism among Democrats. This surge of enthusiasm is also reflected in the polls, with more Democrats expressing their intention to "definitely" vote compared to when Biden was the nominee.
Notably, there has been a significant improvement in support among Black voters for Harris, who is seen as a key demographic for the vice president. While Biden's support among this group had been diminishing over time, Harris has managed to not only reverse the trend but also increase her support. Currently, 74 percent of Black voters state that they will "definitely" vote, compared to 58 percent when Biden was the nominee. Harris now enjoys the backing of 81 percent of Black voters, a notable increase from the 73 percent support that Biden had received.
Additionally, the poll shows a widening gender gap between the two candidates. Harris secures 54 percent of women's votes, while Trump leads among men with 54 percent support.
In key battleground states, the race between Harris and Trump remains tight. The poll reveals a tie in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona. Trump holds a slim 1-point lead in Wisconsin and a 3-point lead in Georgia and North Carolina. However, Harris manages to secure a 2-point lead in Nevada.
The CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted from July 30 to August 2, surveying approximately 3,100 registered voters with a margin of error of 2.1 percent.
As the election draws nearer, the battle between Harris and Trump in these crucial states underscores the significance of each candidate's support base and highlights the potential impact of demographic factors on the outcome of the race.
