A monstrous weather system, Hurricane Beryl, wreaked havoc as it slammed into several Caribbean islands including Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados on Monday. The hurricane, which briefly reached category five status, has caused extensive damage to homes and businesses, widespread power cuts, and disrupted daily life.

Reports indicate that the hurricane, fueled by unusually warm waters in the Atlantic, has unleashed winds of up to 165mph in the region just south of the Dominican Republic. This makes Beryl the earliest category four or five hurricane to ever form in the Atlantic. The hurricane is currently sweeping west across the Caribbean Sea.

The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, urged his fellow citizens to take the hurricane threat seriously, but emphasized that now is not the time to panic. Beryl is expected to reach Jamaica on Wednesday before moving towards Mexico, according to projections.

Grenada's Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, labeled the situation on the island of Carriacou as "grim." He reported significant destruction, with homes and buildings demolished, roads made impassable, and large amounts of debris strewn all over the streets. Emergency teams have been dispatched to provide assistance, but movement remains highly restricted, raising concerns about the possibility of further fatalities.

The Grenada Tourism Authority confirmed that the main island itself has largely escaped the impact of the hurricane. However, they expressed deep sadness over the widespread damage and reports of fatalities on their sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Efforts are underway to coordinate support and relief operations as well as to restore vital services.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, revealed that approximately 90% of homes on Union Island had been destroyed. He also anticipated similar levels of devastation on the islands of Mayreau and Canouan. Vowing to rebuild the archipelago, Gonsalves emphasized the urgent need for reconstruction efforts.

As Hurricane Beryl continues its destructive path across the Caribbean islands, authorities and emergency services are working tirelessly to assist affected communities and provide relief. The international community stands in solidarity with the affected nations, offering support and resources to aid in the recovery process.
