### Cash App Users May Be Eligible for Compensation Following Data Breach Settlement
Cash App users who have held accounts in the past six years could be entitled to a portion of a $15 million class-action settlement. This opportunity arises from two significant security breaches that the company encountered, and those eligible have only a few weeks left to file their claims.
The first incident, which prompted the settlement, occurred in December 2021. A former Cash App employee is said to have downloaded reports containing sensitive information of over 8 million users. The stolen data included full names, brokerage account numbers, and, in some cases, the details of investment portfolios.
A consolidated class-action lawsuit alleged that Cash App and its parent company, Block, failed to implement adequate security measures to prevent further breaches. The lawsuit points to a second breach in 2023 involving unauthorized access to certain Cash App accounts via recycled phone numbers. Furthermore, the plaintiffs accused Cash App and Block of mishandling complaints regarding both breaches and related fraudulent transactions.
Cash App and Block have denied any wrongdoing, stating that the settlement does not constitute an admission of liability. The terms of the settlement offer cover up to $2,500 in out-of-pocket expenses stemming from the breaches and up to three hours of lost time, compensated at a rate of $25 per hour. Users who experienced monetary losses that have not yet been reimbursed are also eligible to file claims.
To be eligible, users must have had a Cash App account between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2023. Claims must be filed by 2 AM ET on November 19. A final court hearing regarding the case is scheduled for December 16.
