Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan Plans to Buck Party Lines in Senate Run
Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, who is vying for a Senate seat in his state, recently announced that if elected, he would not always toe the party line. Drawing inspiration from Democratic Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, Hogan conveyed his willingness to push back against his own party when necessary.
During an interview with CNBC's Becky Quick on "Squawk Box," Hogan was asked if he saw himself adopting a similar role as Manchin and Sinema, who have been known to challenge their party on certain issues. Without hesitation, Hogan responded with a resounding "No question about that." He expressed his belief that he would find himself in a similar role, standing up against divisive and broken politics.
While Hogan's bid for the Senate seems promising, a recent forecast from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ predicts his Democratic opponent, Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince George's County Executive, has a greater than 99 percent chance of victory in the upcoming election. Despite the odds, Hogan remains determined to bring about change and challenge the state's status quo.
In the interview with CNBC, Hogan lamented the departure of talented individuals from the Senate, attributing their exit to frustration with the current state of political discourse. He emphasized the urgent need for a shift away from angry and polarized politics, highlighting his intention to actively work towards repairing the broken political system.
Hogan has a history of critiquing former President Donald Trump and has distanced himself from Trump's endorsement in the past. When questioned about rejecting the endorsement, Hogan firmly stated, "I didn't seek it, I didn't wanna have it, and I have no interest in it. It's not something we're gonna be promoting, that's for sure." This further underscores his independence and determination to prioritize his own convictions.
The race between Hogan and Alsobrooks has attracted significant attention as one of the closely watched Senate races this year. Alongside other key states such as Arizona, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Montana, and Ohio, Maryland's Senate race promises to be a battleground where political allegiances will be tested.
As Hogan forges ahead with his campaign, his commitment to challenging the status quo and prioritizing bipartisan collaboration sets him apart. With his sights set on a different and more cooperative approach, Hogan aims to make his mark in Maryland's political landscape, regardless of the steep odds he faces.
