In a recent interview on "The Dan LeBatard Show," former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason revealed that he had been contemplating leaving CBS' popular show, "The NFL Today," and was more than happy to step aside. Esiason, along with fellow former New York quarterback Phil Simms, will no longer be a part of the show. The decision comes as Esiason seeks to find a better work-life balance.

During the interview, Esiason expressed his gratitude for his time on "The NFL Today", stating that he loved the opportunity to engage with football fans every Sunday. However, he acknowledged that there comes a time when one must prioritize personal time. For Esiason, that time is now.

The 63-year-old former Jets and Bengals quarterback announced last week on his WFAN morning show that he was "stepping away" from the flagship NFL show of CBS. However, he has signed a long-term deal to continue his radio show with co-host Gregg Giannotti. Simms, 68, also announced his departure from CBS after an impressive 26-year run.

Esiason admitted that he would have been willing to return to CBS for one more year, but the retirement of CBS Sports chairman, Sean McManus, signaled a natural transition for him. He had desired to address the matter at the Super Bowl, but he thought it would be inappropriate. Additionally, he understood that Simms did not want to retire from the show. Having worked for 22 years without a weekend break in 40 years, Esiason believed that this was the right time to make a change.

Reflecting on his time at CBS, Esiason described it as a "great run" but expressed his readiness for it to come to an end. He also mentioned that despite discussing controversial topics in the NFL over the past two decades, he never faced any discouragement or reprimand from CBS executives.

While Esiason's departure marks the end of an era for "The NFL Today," CBS will undoubtedly search for suitable replacements to continue the show's success. As Esiason focuses on finding a better balance between work and personal life, he leaves behind a legacy of insightful football analysis and a beloved presence in the broadcast world.

The official date for Esiason's final appearance on "The NFL Today" has not yet been confirmed, but fans can expect him to bring his unique perspective and sharp commentary to the remaining shows before bidding farewell to the CBS audience.
