Costas specifically mentioned the infamous car chase involving Simpson and his former teammate Al Cowlings on June 17, 1994.

Reflecting on the surreal nature of that evening, Costas revealed that as the chase unfolded, he was in a "unique position" due to his coverage of the NBA Finals Game 5 between the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets. While other networks provided live coverage of the car chase, NBC continued broadcasting the basketball game.

Costas also shared an intriguing revelation from a prison visit with Simpson in November 1994. He disclosed that during the car chase and game coverage, Simpson and Cowlings had attempted to reach out to him from the back of the infamous white Ford Bronco. Although their call was answered by a technician who initially doubted Simpson's identity, the former football star wanted to discuss the media's alleged defamation of his character.

Despite the missed opportunity for a conversation, Costas stated that, had he spoken with Simpson on air, he would have held him accountable by asking tough questions about the allegations against him.
