US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is urging both Israel and Hamas to reach a final agreement for a cease-fire in Gaza, stating that 90% of the deal has already been agreed upon, based on a US assessment. Despite the progress made, there are a few critical issues that still need to be resolved, according to Blinken.

Speaking about the ongoing negotiations, Blinken emphasized the importance of both Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas stepping up efforts to bridge the remaining gaps and achieve a comprehensive agreement. This would not only bring an end to the current hostilities but also secure the release of hostages currently being held in Gaza.

One of the key points of contention is the potential presence of Israeli forces in the Philadelphi corridor, which refers to the southern border of the Gaza Strip that adjoins Egypt. Additionally, the exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners is another issue that needs to be addressed.

Blinken expressed his expectations of sharing thoughts and proposals with Israel, as well as with the mediators from Qatar and Egypt, in the coming days. By collaborating closely, the three parties can work towards resolving the outstanding questions and reaching a consensus on the remaining issues.

Highlighting the urgency of finalizing the cease-fire agreement, Blinken acknowledged that every day that passes without a finalized deal increases the risk of unforeseen events that could derail the fragile progress made thus far. He stressed the need for both parties to demonstrate a firm commitment to achieving a diplomatic solution.

However, in an interview with US news channel Fox, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed less optimism about the possibility of a swift resolution, stating that the two sides are "not close" to reaching an agreement.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a series of attacks on Israel, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,200 lives and the abduction of around 250 individuals. Currently, 97 hostages, including 33 individuals presumed dead by the Israeli military, remain in Gaza.

In response, Israel's military operations have resulted in the deaths of over 40,800 people in Gaza, according to the local Hamas-run Health Ministry. The dire situation has also led to the displacement of nearly the entire population of Gaza, with over 2.3 million people being affected, and significant damage to essential infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and housing.

With tensions escalating in the occupied West Bank and along the Israel-Lebanon border, there are growing concerns that the conflict could spread further, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Notably, Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, Germany, and several other countries.

In related news, it has been reported that following visits to Saudi Arabia and Jordan, political leader Annalena Baerbock has arrived in Israel. More information on her trip will be provided by Nina Haase.
