Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed strong emotions and determination to tackle gun violence in the city after a recent mass shooting left four dead and 17 injured in the popular entertainment district. Woodfin called for putting politics aside and prioritizing public safety in response to the tragic incident. The mayor condemned the use of a gun with a Glock switch during the shooting, emphasizing the need for stricter laws to prevent such weapons from being on city streets.
Woodfin highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue of Glock switches, which are illegal under federal law but not prohibited at the state level. He called for a ban on Glock switches, proposing severe penalties for their possession and use in crimes. The mayor advocated for a 10-year sentence for anyone caught with a switch, 25 years for individuals who shoot someone using a switch and survive, and a life sentence if the victim dies. Woodfin stressed the importance of community effort in removing dangerous individuals from the streets and ensuring public safety.
The recent shooting marked the second mass shooting in Birmingham within two months and the third quadruple homicide in the city this year. Woodfin pointed out the prevalence of automatic weapons and conversion devices in such incidents, noting the need for legislative action to empower law enforcement to address the issue effectively. The mayor emphasized that addressing gun violence requires a collaborative approach across all levels of government and called on officials to prioritize the safety and well-being of the community.
