In a bipartisan effort to bolster Secret Service protection following recent assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump, Rep. Mike Kelly, a Republican from Pennsylvania, and Rep. Jason Crow, a Democrat from Colorado, joined forces to advocate for critical reforms and increased resources. The lawmakers emphasized the urgency of addressing operational shortcomings within the Secret Service ahead of Election Day, stressing that the safety of all political figures is imperative regardless of party affiliation.
During an interview with anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week," Rep. Kelly highlighted various factors contributing to the breakdowns in Secret Service protection, such as resource shortages and agent fatigue. He emphasized the need to redeploy funds to enhance training and increase competent personnel on the ground. Stressing that protecting candidates and elected officials is a shared responsibility, Kelly underscored the non-partisan nature of the issue, asserting that it is crucial for Americans to unite in safeguarding their leaders.
In response to a recent report by the Secret Service on the July assassination attempt in Butler, where operational lapses compromised Trump's security, acting U.S. Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe emphasized the importance of accountability and learning from past failures. The review cited failures in securing the former president's line of sight and establishing a secure perimeter, prompting calls for comprehensive operational improvements within the agency.
Both Rep. Kelly and Rep. Crow underlined the necessity of redistributing resources and making personnel adjustments within the Secret Service to address the escalating security challenges faced by an increasing number of protected individuals. They emphasized the need for collaboration with other federal agencies to alleviate the strain on Secret Service agents and ensure adequate protection for high-profile figures. Additionally, the lawmakers urged Americans to cultivate a less confrontational political climate to mitigate the rising threat environment surrounding the upcoming election.
