Congressional leaders have announced the formation of a bipartisan task force comprising 13 members to investigate the recent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. Chaired by Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) and featuring Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) as the ranking member, the panel aims to uncover how suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to evade security and fire at least one shot at the 45th president. The shooting incident occurred on July 13 during a rally in Butler, Pa., leading to the tragic death of firefighter Corey Comperatore and severe injuries to two others, David Dutch and James Copenhaver.

The task force, established by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), is equipped with the authority to issue subpoenas. Among the Republican members are Reps. Mark Green, David Joyce, Laurel Lee, Michael Waltz, Clay Higgins, and Pat Fallon. The Democratic side includes Reps. Lou Correa, Madeleine Dean, Chrissy Houlahan, Glenn Ivey, and Jared Moskowitz.

Notable figures in the investigative team include Kelly, who represents Butler where the shooting occurred, and Green, who heads the House Homeland Security Committee. The Secret Service has recently admitted to making security modifications after earlier denying claims of dishonoring a request for increased security measures for Trump.

Various investigations are now underway surrounding the incident, with the FBI probing Crooks' motives behind the shooting. President Biden has called for an independent review, while the Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General is conducting its own investigation. Additional congressional committees have also initiated inquiries into the security lapse at the July 13 rally.

In response to the security breach, former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned under pressure from bipartisan demands. Despite not being chosen for the task force, Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) has expressed intentions to conduct a parallel independent investigation alongside the panel's efforts to further explore the security lapses.
