In a surprising turn of events, billionaire businessman and lifelong Republican, Stephen Schwarzman, has declared his support for Donald Trump's bid for the presidency. After years of refraining from endorsing any specific GOP candidate, Schwarzman cited the rise of antisemitism and concerns regarding economic, immigration, and foreign policies as the driving forces behind his decision.
Schwarzman, the CEO of private equity firm Blackstone, has been known for his critical remarks about Trump following the 2020 election. In 2022, he even suggested that the Republican Party needed fresh leadership. However, Schwarzman's hopes for a new generation of leaders were not fulfilled.
The billionaire businessman's shift in allegiance comes after declining to back Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in May 2023, stating that a meeting with the presidential hopeful left him uninspired. Schwarzman's decision to support Trump marks a notable change in his perspective.
It is worth mentioning that Schwarzman had supported Trump's candidacy in the 2016 election and later became one of his trusted advisers. As the chair of a prominent business advisory council, Schwarzman played a key role in advising Trump on economic and trade matters while projecting an image of corporate America's support.
However, the advisory council disbanded amidst controversy when Trump asserted that there were "good people on both sides" during the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. Schwarzman condemned bigotry, hatred, and extremism, asserting that they have no place in American society.
It is interesting to note that other top executives at Blackstone, which manages an impressive $1 trillion, have shown support for Democrats. The firm's chief operating officer, Jon Gray, backed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and supported Joe Biden in 2020. Gray, seen as Schwarzman's billionaire successor, has even organized fundraisers for President Biden during the 2024 cycle.
Schwarzman's endorsement of Trump adds another voice to the political landscape, further fueling the already heated discussions surrounding the upcoming elections. Only time will tell how influential his support will be in shaping the Republican Party's future and the outcome of the race for the presidency.
