Billerica Police Officer Fatally Struck in Construction Accident on Boston Road

In a tragic incident on Friday afternoon, Sergeant Ian Taylor, a dedicated Billerica police officer, lost his life in a construction accident on Boston Road. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office, Billerica police, and Massachusetts State Police detectives are launching a joint investigation into the incident, alongside an independent inquiry by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Sgt. Taylor, a 21-year law enforcement veteran, was carrying out a detail assignment when he was struck by an excavator while assisting a tractor trailer navigate the construction site. The 49-year-old officer, who had been with the Billerica Police Department since 2011, was an esteemed member of the force, known for his unwavering commitment to the community.
Described as a loving husband and father of two, Sgt. Taylor had dedicated his life to making a positive impact on the lives of others. Billerica Police Chief Roy Frost expressed heartfelt condolences, highlighting Sgt. Taylor's meaningful contributions during his service. Chief Frost praised his dedication to helping those struggling with substance abuse, as Sgt. Taylor served as a crucial member of the substance abuse prevention committee, aiding individuals battling opiate addiction.
Prior to joining the Billerica Police Department, Sgt. Taylor worked for the Lawrence Police Department from 2003 to 2010. Law enforcement runs in his family, with his father being a retired Lawrence police officer and his younger brother currently serving on the force.
Following the tragic accident, Boston Road has been closed to traffic in both directions. The construction work was being conducted by N. Granese & Sons, a Salem-based company, as they were laying down a water line at the time of the incident. However, the details of the accident and the circumstances surrounding it are yet to be determined by the ongoing investigations.
Sgt. Ian Taylor's passing is a devastating loss for the Billerica community and law enforcement fraternity as a whole.
