In a recent episode of "Real Time," host Bill Maher expressed his skepticism towards President Biden's executive order aimed at curbing the migrant crisis, calling it a desperate move to address a "political vulnerability" ahead of the election. Maher criticized the timing and approach of the order, asserting that it would not resonate with voters and may ultimately harm Biden's chances of re-election.
During the panel discussion, Maher highlighted that the executive order, which puts a cap of 2,500 asylum seekers entering the country, resembled a last-minute attempt to salvage a pressing issue. He pointed out that the same executive order was previously pursued by former President Trump, but failed to gain traction in the courts.
Maher humorously likened the fluctuating cap on asylum seekers to Uber's surge pricing, labeling it a "bizarre scheme" that has garnered dissatisfaction from all sides. He acknowledged that while Congress had the opportunity to address the issue, Republicans intentionally obstructed legislative efforts, keeping the immigration problem alive as a political weapon.
The HBO star also cited alarming statistics, asserting that over 9 million migrants have entered the country since Biden assumed office in January 2021. Maher used the analogy of allowing all inhabitants from Nicaragua to illustrate the scale of the situation. This influx of migrants, according to Maher, poses a significant challenge for Democrats, as they struggle to define an acceptable limit without being labeled as "racist."
Maher further highlighted the impact of immigration on Biden's standing with registered voters. Citing "eye-popping numbers," he revealed that former President Trump still holds a substantial advantage over Biden in terms of handling immigration and border security. Maher emphasized that even though Trump failed to deliver on his promise of building the wall, he still maintained a 30-point lead over Biden in this regard.
Additionally, Maher highlighted a poll showing Trump's significant 23-point advantage among Latino voters, further underscoring the Democrats' failure to connect with their target demographic on the immigration issue.
This is not the first time Maher has sounded the alarm on immigration as a potential Achilles' heel for the Democratic Party in upcoming elections. Last October, Maher warned about the political vulnerabilities associated with the border crisis, echoing his concerns once again.
As the debate surrounding immigration continues, President Biden's executive order faces scrutiny from various quarters, with commentators like Maher questioning its effectiveness and political implications. The ultimate impact on the election remains to be seen, but it is clear that the issue of immigration remains a sensitive and divisive topic in American politics.
