In the wake of President Biden's announcement suspending his reelection campaign and endorsing Vice President Harris, an astonishing 38,500 new voters registered within a 48-hour period, marking the highest number of registrations in the current election cycle, according to voting registration nonprofit group Vote.org.
Of the new voter registrations, a remarkable 83 percent came from individuals aged 18 to 34, signaling a surge in youth participation. Andrea Hailey, the CEO of Vote.org, expressed her optimism, citing this development as a promising indication of a healthy democracy that relies on the voices of all Americans being heard at the ballot box.
Notably, this surge in registrations surpassed the previous record set last September, when pop star Taylor Swift urged her followers to register, resulting in 34,000 new voters within the same time frame. The endorsement of Vice President Harris seems to have sparked similar enthusiasm among young Democrats and Generation Z voters, who are rallying behind her campaign against former President Trump.
Stevie O'Hanlon, the communications director for the youth-led climate advocacy group Sunrise Movement, believes that Harris has the potential to be a game changer for youth voter turnout in the upcoming election. Embracing modern digital trends, Harris' campaign has leveraged popular TikTok content, drawing inspiration from singer Charli XCX's "Brat" album. Videos and remixes featuring Harris have since gone viral, including memes referencing her coconut tree anecdote from a swearing-in ceremony in 2023.
Moreover, the endorsement from President Biden has also translated into significant financial support for the Harris campaign. Within the first 24 hours following Biden's announcement, Harris raised a staggering $81 million, heralded as the highest 24-hour fundraising achievement in the history of presidential candidates. The campaign disclosed that over 888,000 individual grassroots donors contributed to this unprecedented fundraising total, with 60 percent of them being first-time donors in this election cycle.
The combined surge in new voter registrations and remarkable fundraising figures underscores the momentum behind the Harris campaign. As the November election approaches, young voters and grassroots supporters continue to show their unwavering support for Vice President Harris as they believe she holds the potential to bring about real change.
