In a strategic move to rebuild the coalition that fueled his 2020 victory, President Joe Biden's campaign has announced plans to hold over 200 events across Georgia the week of his debate against former President Donald Trump. The campaign aims to galvanize support through a range of activities, including watch parties, grassroots mobilizing events, community barbecues, news conferences with national figures, and visits from notable celebrities like Padma Lakshmi.
The week of events will kick off with a commemoration of the second anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, a landmark ruling that paved the way for anti-abortion laws in Georgia and other Republican-led states. Biden's campaign also intends to open an office in Sandy Springs, a former GOP stronghold that has shifted towards the Democratic party over the past decade.
To maximize outreach, hundreds of volunteer canvassing and phone banking events are scheduled throughout Georgia in the weekend following the upcoming debate. While there is no immediate confirmation of a rally or fundraiser during Biden's visit, the packed schedule reflects the president's renewed focus on reclaiming a state that he won by a slim margin of less than 12,000 votes.
Despite trailing Trump by single digits in most polls, Biden's campaign is determined to reassure local Democrats that Georgia remains a priority. The campaign has already hired over 75 staff members and established 14 offices in the state, with plans for more in the near future. Porsha White, the head of Biden's Georgia operation, emphasized the significance of the upcoming debate, describing it as a platform to highlight the "clear choice" between Biden's vision of protecting freedoms and ensuring equal opportunities for every Georgian, and Trump's perceived inclination towards authoritarianism, tax cuts for the wealthy, and restrictive policies targeting women's rights.
In contrast to Biden's approach, Trump's campaign has adopted a different strategy, relying on outside groups and the Georgia GOP for key aspects of their ground game. The campaign has made limited publicity regarding their new hires and office openings. However, they have established outposts in strategic areas of the state, including a recent unveiling of a headquarters in Savannah aimed at engaging with voters who typically skip presidential elections.
Trump operative Wylie Shaw, speaking at the Savannah gathering, referred to the forthcoming debate as a pivotal moment in the campaign, urging supporters to "tune in next Thursday to witness the beatdown of the century."
With the stage set for a monumental political showdown, both campaigns are intensifying their efforts to sway voters in Georgia. As the tension rises, all eyes will be on the debates as they are set to shape the trajectory of the 2020 election cycle.
