Title: Biden-Harris Administration Awards $4.3 Billion in Grants for Community-Led Climate Solutions
In a significant push towards combating climate change, the Biden-Harris Administration has announced the allocation of over $4.3 billion in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants. Funded by President Biden's Investing in America Agenda, these grants aim to support community-driven initiatives across the United States that tackle the climate crisis, reduce air pollution, advance environmental justice, and accelerate the clean energy transition.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed that 25 applications out of nearly 300 were selected through a competitive grants program. These projects will be implemented in 30 states, including one Tribe, with a focus on reducing greenhouse gas pollution in various sectors such as transportation, electric power, buildings, industry, agriculture, natural and working lands, and waste management.
The combined efforts of the selected grantees are estimated to decrease greenhouse gas pollution by up to 971 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050. To put this into perspective, it is equivalent to the emissions produced by 5 million average homes' energy use annually for over 25 years.
Notably, the grant program also includes provisions to assist 45 states, tribes, and territories in developing Climate Action Plans, making it the largest nationwide effort to spur concrete local climate action goals.
The grants will fund projects to implement technologies and programs that reduce greenhouse gases and other harmful pollutants throughout the country. These initiatives aim to build the necessary infrastructure, housing, and industries required for a clean energy future. Additionally, the grants will create economic growth opportunities and job creation in new and emerging industries while supporting the development of training programs to prepare workers for the clean energy sector.
The EPA expects to announce an additional $300 million in selections under the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program for Tribes, Tribal consortia, and territories later this summer.
The grant recipients were unveiled by EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan during the Biden-Harris Administration's Investing in America tour in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Notably, Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection was awarded a grant of more than $396 million for their proposed RISE PA project, which aims to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions through targeted grants and incentives.
Overall, the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants reflect President Biden's strong belief in the power of community-led solutions to combat climate change and stimulate economic growth. The investment in states, local governments, and Tribes will enable them to implement ambitious plans to achieve climate pollution reductions by 2030 and beyond, while prioritizing environmental justice and public health.
As the Biden-Harris Administration continues to mobilize resources and address climate change on a national scale, the allocation of these grants marks a significant step towards achieving the President's commitment of reducing climate pollution by over 50% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The chosen projects exemplify the administration's commitment to the Justice40 Initiative, ensuring that at least 40% of the benefits from federal climate and clean energy investments reach disadvantaged communities burdened by underinvestment and pollution.
The EPA anticipates awarding the funds later this year once all legal and administrative requirements are met. These projects, along with the $250 million in planning grant funding provided by the EPA, will complement the Biden-Harris Administration's comprehensive climate strategies, further propelling the nation towards a sustainable and resilient future.
