In response to the recent decision by the Arizona Supreme Court to uphold an 1864 abortion law that criminalizes the procedure, the Biden campaign has launched an ad targeting Arizona voters. The ad, featuring President Biden himself, aims to highlight the risk that former President Trump poses to women's reproductive rights.
President Biden directly addresses the viewers in the 30-second ad, asking, "The question is - if Donald Trump gets back in power, what freedom will you lose next?" He emphasizes that individual's bodies and decisions should belong to them, not to the government or Trump. Biden pledges to vigorously fight for the restoration of their freedom.
The Biden campaign plans to invest over $1 million in an advertising blitz in Arizona, specifically targeting younger, female, and Latino voters throughout the month of April. The ads will air during popular primetime shows, including "Abbott Elementary," "Survivor," "Grey's Anatomy," "American Idol," "The Voice," and "Saturday Night Live."
The campaign's efforts also include a testimonial ad featuring Amanda Zurawski, a Texas woman who had to travel outside her state for necessary care after being denied treatment following a life-threatening infection following a miscarriage.
The Arizona Supreme Court's decision to uphold the 1864 abortion law has sparked outrage among women across the state. The law, which lacks exceptions for rape, incest, or a woman's health, will soon become effective, causing concern among reproductive rights advocates.
Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez expressed her dismay, stating, "This nightmare is only possible because of Donald Trump." She called attention to the fact that the law predates Arizona's statehood and urged for its repeal.
Vice President Harris is scheduled to travel to Arizona for a rally on Friday, where she will focus on reproductive rights. The rally aims to support those who are concerned about the potential consequences of the upheld law and demonstrate the administration's commitment to protecting women's right to choose.
Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, has called for the 1864 ban to be repealed, while the state's Democratic attorney general has declared that she will not enforce any abortion bans. Meanwhile, Trump, the presumptive presidential nominee for the Republican Party, has expressed his belief that the Arizona law goes too far. However, he remains firm in his stance that states should have the authority to determine abortion policies.
Trump, who takes pride in appointing Supreme Court justices who contributed to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, has faced criticism from Democrats who blame him for the wave of state-level abortion bans. Trump asserts that returning the issue to the states was a significant achievement and insists that it reflects the will of the people.
As reproductive rights become a central issue in the political landscape, the Biden campaign is actively engaging in Arizona to raise awareness about the threats posed to abortion access. They aim to mobilize voters and ensure that the voices of those concerned about reproductive rights are heard in the upcoming battles over women's healthcare.
