In the wake of Joe Biden's lackluster debate performance against Donald Trump, the pressure on his campaign continues to mount. Reports suggest that top Democratic donors are expressing concerns about Biden's candidacy, with a Friday conference call featuring Kamala Harris failing to alleviate their worries.
The conference call, organized by Jen O'Malley Dillon, chair of Biden's campaign, drew in approximately 300 donors ranging from unwavering Biden supporters to skeptics. However, one prominent donor described the call as "ludicrous," highlighting a growing dissatisfaction within the party ranks.
According to NBC News's Yamiche Alcindor, some attendees labeled the call as "mismanaged" and "rushed," further fueling the criticisms. Despite efforts to rally support for Biden, there were concerns among donors about how the campaign was being managed.
During the call, Harris, the vice-presidential candidate, urged donors to stand behind Biden, stressing his commitment to putting "the American people first" and his ability to defeat Trump in the upcoming election. Echoing her confidence, Harris emphasized that the campaign had a strong chance of victory.
However, the criticism from donors appeared to focus on their discomfort with being directed on how to publicly support Biden. Participants were reportedly advised against voicing any dissenting views, with Melissa Morales, head of Somos Votantes, urging them to "turn down the volume on this conversation publicly." This instruction irked some donors, who felt it infringed upon their freedom of expression.
"These are donors who are not used to getting admonished and told what to do," noted a source familiar with the call.
The reported dissatisfaction among top Democratic donors underscores the growing pressure on the Biden campaign. With concerns mounting following Biden's debate performance and now extending to the management of the campaign, it remains to be seen how the campaign will address these issues and regain the confidence of its supporters.
As the election draws nearer, the spotlight on Biden becomes more intense, and it is crucial for his campaign to address the concerns raised by donors in order to strengthen the unity of the party and build momentum towards November's election.
