**Biden Administration Faces Major Test Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Conflict**

The Biden administration's extensive efforts to prevent a direct war between Israel and Iran are now under significant pressure, following Tehran's recent launch of ballistic missiles at Israel. For the past year, U.S. officials have worked relentlessly to manage tensions and avoid an outright confrontation between these two adversaries. However, the latest aggressive move by Iran may trigger consequential Israeli retaliation, potentially dragging the United States and other regional nations into the conflict.

This incident harks back to a similar situation six months ago when Iran launched missiles and drones at Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike on a diplomatic compound in Syria. At that time, the damage to Israel was minimal, and Washington successfully urged Israel to refrain from a large-scale response. Present circumstances suggest that Israel is unlikely to exercise the same level of restraint, according to former U.S. and Israeli officials. An ex-Israeli official noted that responding minimally, as they did following the April 13 event, would be challenging for Israel now.

Efforts for peace have been complicated recently, as illustrated by the failed attempt last week to broker a ceasefire between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that diplomacy remains the preferable path, stressing the urgency of a coordinated international approach to prevent an escalation into a full-scale war. Despite these calls for peaceful resolution, Israel has intensified its military campaign in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah leaders, weapons depots, and militant positions.

Meanwhile, in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military campaign has resulted in over 40,000 fatalities as reported by Gaza’s health ministry, with at least 97 people kidnapped by Hamas on October 7. A significant portion of these hostages is presumed dead. As Israeli forces continue their operations, the U.S. administration has shifted its immediate aims towards preventing a direct war with Iran.

In a bid to provide a deterrent against further Iranian aggression, President Joe Biden has reinforced the U.S. military presence in the region. This includes the deployment of additional fighter jets, bombers, and Navy destroyers outfitted with Aegis defense systems capable of countering ballistic missile threats. The Pentagon recently announced the dispatch of a "few thousand" more troops to augment the current 40,000-strong American force stationed around the area.

On the diplomatic front, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin held discussions with his Israeli counterpart to assess Iran's military maneuvers. The reaction from America's Arab allies remains uncertain, particularly regarding their cooperation in defending Israel or permitting U.S. overflight rights. Domestic public opinion in these countries is largely antagonistic toward aiding Israel. Notwithstanding, Jordan has permitted U.S. forces to operate within its airspace, successfully intercepting Iranian missiles on Tuesday. A senior Jordanian official confirmed that this policy would apply to any similar threats traversing their airspace.

In summary, the situation has intensified, and stakes are high for the Biden administration as it navigates these tense developments in the Middle East.
