**Vice President Harris and Former President Trump Vie for Crucial Black Voter Support in U.S. Elections**
As Election Day dawns in the United States, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are intensely focusing on securing support from Black voters, a group historically significant in American elections. Over the recent week, a notable surge of enthusiasm has been observed among Black voters, driven by a sense of peer pressure, according to CBS News contributor Ed Gordon.
Currently, the number of Black eligible voters in the U.S. stands at more than 34 million, a 7% increase since the last presidential election in 2020. This demographic now constitutes 14% of all eligible voters. Despite some expressed reservations among Black male voters, a recent CBS News poll indicates that 87% of likely Black voters are favoring Harris over Trump.
Ed Gordon attributes this trend to the recent rhetoric from Donald Trump, which he believes has galvanized Black America, including Black men, in opposition to Trump. LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter, emphasized the role of various grassroots organizations in maintaining high Black voter turnout, underscoring the efforts of faith-based and social justice groups extensively working on the ground.
As the campaign draws to a close, Kamala Harris has strategically focused on engaging Black men, releasing an ad in the Philadelphia market. Concerns linger in Philadelphia about whether Black voter turnout will be substantial enough, but Harris's significant presence, including rallying the night before Election Day and her noteworthy announcement to be headquartered at her alma mater, Howard University, resonates strongly with African Americans.
Meanwhile, Trump campaigned fervently in North Carolina and Pennsylvania before concluding his efforts with a final rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan. According to Gordon, the ground game within the Black community will be critical in the final push for votes, with substantial efforts underway to drive voter turnout in favor of Harris, aiming to secure her position.
