In a late-night incident on Friday, twenty-six barges broke loose from a vessel at the first mile marker of the Ohio River, wreaking havoc as they floated uncontrollably downstream. The loose barges caused substantial damage to Peggy's Marina in Pittsburgh, according to officials.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard revealed that all twenty-six barges have been accounted for, but the ensuing chaos resulted in significant destruction to the nearby docks. Of the 23 barges loaded with cargo, the majority carried nonhazardous dry cargo, predominantly coal. The remaining three barges were empty.

The city of Pittsburgh issued a news release stating that eleven barges were found near Brunot Island, adjacent to a riverbank, where they are being held by a tugboat. Nine barges came to a halt at Emsworth Dam. While six barges managed to bypass the dam, five have been located. Unfortunately, one barge is believed to have sunk.

Authorities had initially closed the McKees Rock and West End bridges in Pittsburgh as a precautionary measure. However, following a thorough examination and assessment, officials declared the bridges safe for operation, and they have since reopened.

Campbell Transportation Co., the owner and operator of the barges, released a statement to local station KDKA. The company emphasized their immediate focus on public safety and minimizing any potential environmental impact resulting from the incident. They attributed the breakaway to the high water conditions and strong currents caused by flooding in the area.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by maritime operations during unpredictable weather conditions. Efforts will now be concentrated on repairing the damage caused and ensuring the safety of the river and surrounding areas.

As investigations into the breakaway continue, authorities will be looking into any other factors that may have contributed to the incident. In the meantime, the affected marina and the Campbell Transportation Co. are working closely with local authorities to mitigate the aftermath of this unfortunate event.
