In a shocking turn of events, France's high-speed TGV rail network was targeted by "malicious acts" that caused disruptions on the day of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. State-owned railway operator SNCF confirmed that arson attacks were responsible for damaging facilities along several busy lines.

Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete described the attacks as an "outrageous criminal act," noting that people were seen fleeing from the scene of fires, and incendiary devices were discovered. SNCF stated that repairs would be conducted over the entire weekend, leading to the cancellation of many routes. CEO Jean-Pierre Farandou revealed that around 800,000 customers were impacted ahead of a busy holiday weekend.

The perpetrators of these seemingly coordinated attacks are yet to be identified, prompting French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to mobilize the country's intelligence services to investigate and bring them to justice. Attal condemned the acts as "prepared and coordinated acts of sabotage."

The malicious acts primarily targeted installations along the lines connecting Paris with the west, north, and east of the country. Fortunately, a potential attack on the southeastern line was foiled. SNCF urged passengers to postpone their trips and avoid train stations. The disruptions also affected trains to neighboring Belgium and London under the English Channel.

The attacks raised concerns regarding security measures for the Paris Olympics, where 7,500 athletes, 300,000 spectators, and VIPs were expected to attend. The heightened tensions surrounding the games were evident as thousands of police officers, soldiers, and security agents were deployed for the opening ceremony. The event, viewed by more than 100 global leaders, is taking place along a 6km stretch of the Seine, with snipers stationed on rooftops and drones monitoring the area.

While it remains unclear whether the arson attacks are directly linked to the international sporting event, their occurrence adds to the already tense geopolitical backdrop. The ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine cast doubt on the possibility of an "Olympic truce" as called for by French President Emmanuel Macron during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Criticism has also been directed at the Olympics for perceived double standards. Russian and Belarusian athletes were banned from participating under their countries' flags, while Israel, amidst the war in Gaza, was allowed to compete with 88 athletes. The Palestine Olympic Committee's call to block Israel's participation went unanswered.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the arson attacks, with hopes of swiftly identifying the culprits. The disruption caused a significant setback for France's transportation system, as efforts to repair the damage and ensure the safety of the rail network continue.
