In a major breakthrough, authorities have made an arrest in the 1993 killing of Carmen Van Huss, putting an end to a cold case that had haunted her family for 31 years. Dana Shepherd, 52, was apprehended on August 20 following an investigation that utilized genetic genealogy techniques, according to a news release by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Shepherd, who was located and taken into custody in Boone County, Missouri, is now being held without bond, as confirmed by the jail records. Prosecutors in Marion County, Indiana, are in the process of seeking his extradition to face charges related to the murder, the news release stated. As of now, it remains unclear whether Shepherd has legal representation.
The shocking murder of Carmen Van Huss occurred on March 24, 1993, when her body was discovered in her apartment north of downtown Indianapolis. The investigation revealed signs of a struggle, and the Marion County Coroner's Office reported that Van Huss had been stabbed a chilling 61 times. Despite years of extensive police work, the case remained unsolved, leaving her loved ones desperate for justice.
However, in the summer of 2023, a breakthrough was finally achieved when the detective assigned to the case provided a DNA sample to Parabon NanoLabs, a genetic genealogy company known for assisting law enforcement in solving cold cases. The analysis combined with investigative efforts led to the identification of Dana Shepherd as a suspect.
Further DNA testing was conducted, linking Shepherd's genetic material to evidence found at the crime scene and on the victim's body. The powerful combination of genetic genealogy and relentless detective work brought closure to a case that had remained unresolved for three decades.
At a news conference, Jimmy Van Huss, the deceased's brother, spoke about the impact of his sister's murder on their family and expressed gratitude for the long-awaited arrest. He acknowledged the overwhelming support from relatives and friends, who had tirelessly sought justice for Carmen throughout the years.
"While nothing can ever replace their loved one, we hope that today's arrest brings them some measure of peace," stated Deputy Police Chief Kendale Adams.
The arrest of Dana Shepherd represents a significant step towards closure for the Van Huss family and a testament to the power of modern investigative techniques. As the legal proceedings progress, the community remains hopeful that justice will be served for Carmen Van Huss and those who loved her.
