Voters in Arizona will head to the polls on Tuesday to select the Republican candidate who will challenge Democrat Ruben Gallego in the U.S. Senate primary election. The primary contest will determine which type of conservative, both loyal to former President Donald Trump, will be on the ballot for the November 5 election.
Kari Lake has emerged as the frontrunner in the race, boasting endorsements from Trump, most Senate Republicans, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. However, Lake's reputation for election denialism and staunch criticism of the media as "fake news" has drawn both attention and controversy. In contrast, Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb offers a less high-profile brand of Trump loyalty, alongside a track record of elective success, despite facing financial constraints and displaying less hostility towards the media.
Neuroscientist Elizabeth Jean Reye rounds out the field by positioning herself as a Republican in the mold of former President Ronald Reagan. Lake, who has been at the forefront of the race, has come under scrutiny for various controversies and policy reversals, including her stance on a 19th-century near-total ban on abortions.
Despite a late entrance to the race and minimal fundraising success, Lamb has contested as an alternative to Lake, aligning with her views on election integrity and abortion legislation. Meanwhile, Reye has steered clear of election fraud discussions, opting for a Reagan-style Republican platform as an alternative approach.
As the primary election results are set to be announced at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Arizona voters hold the keys to determining the Republican candidate who will vie for control of the U.S. Senate in the upcoming election.
