In a recent interview on CBS News's "Face the Nation," Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) expressed his concerns over the Arizona Supreme Court's ruling that effectively banned almost all abortions in the state. Kelly attributed the ruling to the actions of former President Donald Trump while in office.

Kelly denounced the ruling, stating that it has been a "disaster" for women in Arizona, as they have lost a fundamental right to abortion. He directly blamed Trump for the situation, referring to Trump's recent remarks where he claimed responsibility for "breaking" the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, thereby empowering the state court to reinstate an 1864 abortion law that imposes severe penalties, including imprisonment, on those involved in the procedure.

The controversy surrounding Trump's stance on abortion was further heightened as he stated that federal legislation on the matter was unnecessary since states were doing a "brilliant" job in restricting access to abortion. While Trump seemed to advocate for leaving the issue up to the states, he also seemed to indicate that he would not sign a federal ban.

The Arizona Supreme Court's ruling upholding the 1864 law has prompted Trump to call for swift action by Arizona lawmakers to adjust the state's abortion policy. However, attempts to repeal the law by Democrats in the state Legislature were blocked by Republicans.

Kelly expressed hope for a ballot initiative in November to secure the right to abortion in Arizona. He emphasized the concern for women's health, noting that the 1864 ruling, enabled by the former president's actions, could have dire consequences. He also predicted that the ruling would lead to increased voter turnout in the upcoming November election.

Responding to the allegations, Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, pointed to the former president's earlier statement on the Arizona abortion ruling. The statement criticized the court for going "too far" and labeled Democrats as "extremists" on the issue. Trump called on the Arizona governor and Legislature to rectify the situation immediately by enacting legislation that includes exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.

The battle over abortion rights in Arizona has intensified, with both Kelly and Trump positioning themselves within the debate. As the state grapples with the recent ruling, it remains to be seen how this contentious issue will be resolved and its impact on the upcoming election.
