In a devastating turn of events, a family reunion in Arizona took a distressing turn as 13 hikers, including three children who required hospitalization, had to be rescued from a hiking trail amidst scorching temperatures.
According to a post on the Scottsdale Fire Department's Facebook page, the group of hikers embarked on the Gateway Loop Trail in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. However, they soon found themselves lost and without water, as the area was under an excessive heat warning with temperatures soaring to 108 degrees.
"The family was located off the trail in a wash under a tree several miles into the trail," stated the fire department. Concerned for their safety, the hikers made a distress call and requested assistance. Capt. Dave Folio from the Scottsdale Fire Department revealed to ABC News that within three hours, over 65 firefighters were dispatched for a mountain rescue mission.
While all those rescued are expected to survive, the incident had its share of harrowing moments. A 10-year-old child was treated and taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, the child was reported to be in "great condition" by Friday evening, according to Folio. Additionally, two toddlers, both just a year old, were also transported to a local hospital due to exhibiting symptoms of heat exhaustion.
The rescue crews went to great lengths to ensure the safe retrieval of the stranded hikers. They utilized a "big-wheel" stretcher to assist in the removal of a woman from the trail. Despite the challenging circumstances, the combined efforts of the firefighters brought everyone to safety.
As this incident highlights the importance of adequate preparation when venturing out in extreme weather conditions, it serves as a reminder for all outdoor enthusiasts to stay hydrated and informed about local weather conditions. Authorities are urging hikers to plan their routes carefully and carry essential supplies, especially during periods of extreme heat.
The Scottsdale Fire Department and local authorities have expressed relief that everyone involved in this distressing incident is expected to recover fully. This unfortunate turn of events during what was meant to be a joyous family gathering underscores the need for caution and preparedness when engaging in outdoor activities, particularly in this unforgiving desert environment.
