Liz Cheney. The probe will examine whether Trump’s statements, made at an event in Arizona, violate state laws regarding death threats.

In an interview with 12NEWS in Phoenix, Mayes, a Democrat, disclosed that she has tasked her office’s criminal division chief with analyzing Trump’s remarks. The analysis aims to determine if the comments constitute a death threat under Arizona law. “I’m not ready to conclude whether it was or it wasn’t, but such rhetoric certainly doesn’t help as we prepare for our election and strive to keep peace at our polling places,” Mayes said.

Richie Taylor, a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, confirmed to NBC News that the investigation is underway. NBC News also reached out to Trump’s campaign for a response.

Trump’s comments came during an event with Tucker Carlson in Arizona, where he suggested that Cheney, whom he described as a "radical war hawk," should face guns pointed at her. "Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her," Trump stated. He emphasized that politicians like Cheney are comfortable advocating for wars while safely positioned in Washington.

Reacting to the controversy, Trump took to his Truth Social account on Friday, accusing Cheney of lacking the courage to fight in wars herself. He reiterated that critics like her prefer to send others to combat zones.

Trump’s rhetoric has increasingly taken on a violent tone in his recent campaign activities. He has labeled Democrats and his opponents as the "enemy from within" and pledged to use the U.S. military against American citizens. Additionally, he has mentioned the possibility of jailing his political rivals if he wins the 2024 election.

Vice President Kamala Harris condemned Trump’s statements about Cheney, asserting that his rhetoric should disqualify him from the presidency. "He has increased his violent rhetoric, Donald Trump has, about political opponents and in great detail, in great detail suggested rifles should be trained on former Rep. Liz Cheney," Harris expressed to reporters. She described Trump as “permanently out for revenge” and “increasingly unstable and unhinged,” criticizing his growing list of adversaries and extreme rhetoric.

NBC News continues to seek further comments from Trump’s campaign regarding the ongoing investigation in Arizona.
