In an interview with Politico, the head of prominent anti-abortion group Live Action, Lila Rose, has issued a strong warning to former President Donald Trump. Rose expressed her frustration with Trump's wavering stance on abortion rights, particularly as he prepares to face Vice President Kamala Harris, a vocal advocate for women's reproductive rights.
During the interview with Politico's Ian Ward, Rose criticized Trump's recent statements, which she deemed increasingly pro-abortion. Trump has stated that he would not push for a national ban on abortions if re-elected, a position that contrasts with the adamant support of his running mate, J.D. Vance. Rose's concerns were further heightened by Trump's mention of respecting several exceptions.
Rose emphasized that these positions and statements are alienating pro-life voters, making it difficult for them to rally behind Trump and Harris. She indicated that if the election were held today, she would not vote for either candidate due to their policies and positions on abortion.
"The recent statements that they have been making...are making it untenable for pro-life voters to get out the vote for them," Rose expressed her frustration to Ward. "It is not the job of the pro-life movement to vote for President Trump," she added, blaming his inner circle for providing him with what she considers to be misguided advice on moderating his abortion policies.
While Rose acknowledged that sometimes voting for the lesser of two evils may be necessary, she argued that the pro-life movement should not simply accept the positions handed to them, especially from a politician who has previously declared a pro-life stance before changing their position.
Rose also addressed the notion that being pro-life is a losing issue, asserting that it depends on how it is presented, who is presenting it, and the financial resources dedicated to the cause. She dismissed the argument that supporting pro-life initiatives at the state level would hinder a pro-life stance in federal elections as "garbage."
In a scathing critique, Rose labeled Trump's approach as politically unwise, potentially detrimental to his chances of winning the election, and morally unprincipled. She urged Trump to focus on galvanizing his base instead of attempting to pander to Harris' supporters. Rose highlighted the ironical nature of blaming pro-lifers for a potential loss while simultaneously needing their votes.
It remains to be seen how Trump will address the concerns raised by Rose and other pro-life advocates. As the election draws closer, the collision of differing views on abortion rights is poised to shape the election landscape and influence voter turnout.
